MEAT PROCESSING INDUSTRY - SKILLED MIGRANT MEATWORKERS
Last Wednesday, 13 September, I asked the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Small Business a question about the delay in the state’s signing off on the industry labour agreement to enable 150 skilled Filipino meatworkers immediate access to a visa 457 as approved by Minister Amanda Vanstone. Hon Kim Chance interjected with a remark indicating that Minister Amanda Vanstone “has not approved it”. Is the minister’s statement correct now, and was it correct at the time? Hon KIM CHANCE

Yes, it is correct. When I had a close look at the answer provided by the parliamentary secretary, I found it actually supported my interjection. The federal minister, Senator Vanstone, had not provided approval in the terms indicated in the member’s question.
