school crossing arrangements — 2010 school year
Some notice has been given of this question. I refer to recent statement made by the Minister for Police about a review of school crossings. (1) What new arrangements will be in place for the management of school crossings for the commencement of the next school year? (2) Will the minister consider using auxiliary police officers for this role? Hon PETER COLLIER

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. The minister has provided the following answers — (1) The review of children’s crossings has not been completed; therefore, the current interim arrangements will remain until further notice. (2) It is a consideration. However, at this stage it is envisaged that police auxiliary officers will initially perform custodial duties in lockups and during prisoner transportation, as well as managing and handling drugs, property and firearms. They will also carry out other support roles at police stations, thus enabling officers and detectives to concentrate on the front line.
