AGRICULTURE — CROP DAMAGE — SOUTH EAST WHEATBELT
1073. Hon DARREN WEST to the Minister for
Agriculture and Food:
This
is the first time I have asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food a question.
I congratulate him on his role.
(1) Is the
minister aware of the catastrophic damage to crops in Western Australia's
grain-growing regions, particularly the south east wheatbelt, as a result of
recent extreme frost events?
(2) Has the
minister met with any of the growers affected; and, if yes, whom did he meet
and when did he meet with them?
(3) What action is the minister
proposing to address the needs of those affected?
(4) Will any
government funds be available to businesses affected by the frosts or
individuals affected by the frosts; and, if yes, how much and when will be made
available?
(5) If no to (4), why not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) I am aware of
the damage to crops in the WA grain-growing regions as a result of recent frost
events.
(2) Yes. Last week I met with
growers and agricultural consultants in the Kulin district.
(3) The
government is providing a range of support services to growers affected by
frost, including services from Rural Financial Counselling Services WA and the
Regional Men's Health Initiative. They also have access to the farm
household allowance and farm business training. The government is also
investing in research and development to reduce the impact of frost and to
manage frost risk and advising on management options for frost-affected crops.
(4) No.
(5) The state
government does not provide funds to businesses and individuals affected by
frost events. The state government provides funding to support services for
farm businesses and individuals affected by events such as frost through Rural
Financial Counselling Services WA and the Regional Men's Health
Initiative. The federal government also provides funding for businesses and
individuals through the farm household allowance and its Managing Farm Risk
Programme.
