QuestionView source ↗

With reference to the 8 November announcement by Kleenheat Gas of an increase of 4c a litre for liquefied petroleum gas products, which has led to an eight per cent rise in the consumer price index for taxi charges - (1) When will the minister adjust taxi fares to reflect the increase? (2) Will the minister confirm that holders of country taxi plates have been granted perpetuity of tenure? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Taxi fares are reviewed annually based on the movement of the private motoring index, which is a component of the consumer price index. The review is undertaken after the June quarter data for the consumer price index is released in August of each year. (2) Country taxis operate on the issue of an annual renewable licence. These licences have an automatic right of renewal and can only be cancelled, suspended or not renewed through a formal process under the Act. From a legal and practical point of view, the rights of country taxi licence holders continue until there is a failure to comply with the relevant legislative provisions.
