In an ABC report of 20 May 2002, Dick Stott from the RAC stated that according to the 2001-02 budget, the Government will earn $3.25 million a month in speed and red-light camera fines; however, only one-third of this amount will go back to saving the lives of motorists. (1) In light of the above, could the minister please clarify what he meant when he stated in Parliament on 28 June 2001 that “the commitment given at the election was to spend all the money raised from the red-light cameras Multanovas on road safety”? (2) How much revenue was raised through Multanovas? It refers to reed-light cameras but it should be red-light cameras. That was probably done to try to trick the minister. (3) Will the minister provide a breakdown of all road safety initiatives that received government funding in 2001-02? (4) What road safety initiatives are receiving government funding from revenue generated from Multanovas and red-light cameras? Several members interjected. Hon NICK GRIFFITHS
