I thank Hon Barry House for some notice of the question. Although there is no requirement for government to compensate fishers as a consequence of these closures, the Carpenter government has committed $7.6 million to assist those commercial fishers affected by the introduction of the metropolitan zone closure and implementation of the broader outcomes of the wetline review. The funding will support two fisheries adjustment schemes and act-of-grace payments to fishers directly affected by not gaining access to the metropolitan zone of the west coast demersal scalefish fishery. An independent committee, which held its first meeting last week, was established to oversee each of these adjustment processes and will be providing me with further advice in the near future. I expect to establish the two fisheries adjustment schemes shortly, and fishers will then be advised of the availability of these schemes and asked to submit offers. Claims for act-of-grace payments by any affected fishers will be considered by me as and when they are made. With regard to the closure of part of Geographe Bay to commercial salmon fishing and beach seine fishing, the closure of the area between Cape Naturaliste and Port Geographe will not take effect until July 2009. There is currently a fisheries adjustment scheme in place for the south west salmon fishery until March 2008, and I will be extending that scheme to consider adjustment offers from affected fishers through until 2009.
