The minister is particularly concerned with reports that the dry winter in 2001 will exacerbate the problem and that the decline will spread to the north and south of the area currently affected. In recent months, the equivalent of three full-time officers have been devoted to the problem. Officers in several other agencies have also been involved at various times in dealing with the problem.
