Will the minister provide the Parliament with the following information - (1) The number of people in Homeswest housing? (2) The number of people waiting for Homeswest housing? (3) The number of children in the care of their families on Homeswest waiting lists? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS
AnswerView source ↗
I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Approximately 97 000. This is an estimate for all program dwellings. (2) There were 13 264 applications as at 31 July 2004, comprising 29 991 people. (3) There were 11 614 children under 16 years of age as at 31 July 2004. Please note: people waiting for Homeswest housing are also given bond assistance by the department to assist them into private rentals. With regard to (2) and (3), this excludes community housing and remote Aboriginal community housing applicants. The fact is that being on a Homeswest waiting list does not mean that a person is homeless. If the current federal Government would adopt the stance of the Federal Leader of the Opposition, Mark Latham, public housing providers would receive greater assistance.
