722. Mr S.K. L'ESTRANGE to the Minister for Housing:
I have a supplementary question. As
the minister knows, the domestic economy is underpinned by a strong housing
sector, so why is he not taking action to support the housing market by
removing the seven per cent foreign investor surcharge and reinstating Perth's
regional sponsored migration scheme status?
Mr W.J. Johnston : Because
they are dumb ideas.

The
member for Cannington just identified that they are dumb ideas. Why would we
want to attend to some of those issues when we think that we should
preserve housing in Western Australia for ordinary Western Australians? Why do
we not look after young Western Australians? I will tell members how we are
looking after young Western Australians. We
identify families earning $155 000; think about who that is. They are graduate
teachers and graduate coppers, the key workers of this state who need
accommodation to get on and serve the state. These are the people we support
and this is what we do on this side of the house. The other thing that we think
is the best thing we can do for the housing market is grow jobs and grow
opportunities in this state. I outlined in my previous remarks about the Asian
engagement strategy how we are focused on delivering a diversified economy,
focused on delivering jobs for successive generations of Western Australians,
and focusing on the here and now to make sure people have access to decent
affordable training and decent affordable jobs because of the initiatives of
this government.
The SPEAKER : That is the end
of question time.
