(1) Is the minister aware that in October 2001 more than 100 Western Australian women will represent Australia in an international singing competition in Portland, Oregon? (2) In view of the significant financial burden placed on individual members of the Perth Harmony Chorus, will the minister provide financial assistance to this group to ensure proper recognition for these outstanding Western Australian women? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) Yes. (2) In submitting a recent application for funding to ArtsWA, the Perth Harmony Chorus accepted the system of peer panel assessment in a highly competitive environment in which demand far exceeds funds available, and was unsuccessful.  This does not detract from the achievement of this group.  As the member for Thornlie, the minister will be making a personal donation to a constituent who is a member of the Perth Harmony Chorus.  I have no doubt that Hon Derrick Tomlinson will be asked to make a donation, as will a number of other members - so dig deep!
