ROAD SAFETY — POLICE RESOURCES
710. Ms L. METTAM to the Minister for Police:
I have a supplementary question.
Why was one in five positions out
of the specialist road safety unit empty at the end of April?

AnswerView source ↗

I was not listening, but I understand
the Commissioner of Police was on the radio this morning and he was asked about
the numbers to which the member for Vasse is referring. I am reading from a transcript
here, so it may not be word-for-word correct, but according to my notes, the
commissioner stated —
Peter Collier is factually incorrect.
Two years ago, there were 50 vacancies in road policing and at the moment,
there are four or five vacancies. There are more police on the road than before
COVID-19.
As I have said earlier, there are
more police in Western Australia doing more roles.
Several members interjected.
The DEPUTY SPEAKER : Members!
Mr P.
PAPALIA : There are more police in Western Australia doing policing
right across the state than at any time in history and there are 724 more than
when the member was in office.
