WORKFORCE ACCOMMODATION
1148. Hon JACQUI BOYDELL to the minister representing the
Minister for Planning:
I refer to the government's
position statement on workforce accommodation, which states —
Where practicable, workforce
accommodation should be provided in established towns, in locations suitable to
its context, to facilitate their ongoing sustainability.
(1) How is the government ensuring
that this policy is adhered to?
(2) Since the
document was published in January this year, what further work has been
undertaken to establish a policy on fly in, fly out work camps in regional
towns?
(3) Does the government
intend to provide any assistance to local councils in their negotiations with
multinational mining companies?

(1) The document
that the member refers to is a position statement of the Western Australian
Planning Commission. The position statement outlines the development
requirements for workforce accommodation under the Planning and Development Act
2005 and associated regulations, and provides guidance to local governments on
the role of the local planning framework in the planning and development of
workforce accommodation. The position statement is intended to assist local
governments to address workforce accommodation when preparing and implementing
local planning schemes and strategies. Adherence to the position statement
forms a part of the WAPC's assessment of local planning schemes and
strategies proposed by local governments.
(2)–(3) The
minister, the WAPC and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage are
working with councils to help address the individual challenges.
