BROOME SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
— ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SETTING
1327. Hon ROBIN SCOTT to the Minister for Education and
Training:
I refer to the recent comments made
by the director general of the Department of Education, Lisa Rodgers, on ABC Kimberley breakfast radio regarding the
violence and intimidation at Broome Senior High School. The director general mentioned an alternative learning setting where the students who were
the most challenging are now in an education program that is working
intensively with them and that it is doing well.
(1) How many students are in this
alternative learning setting?
(2) What is their attendance rate?
(3) As the
director general identified that the violence is a community issue, how long is
this arrangement intended to last?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) Eight students are engaged in
the alternative learning setting.
(2) As at and
including 24 November 2020, the combined attendance rate for the students
attending the ALS over the period it has been operating is 53 per cent. The
alternative learning setting engages some of the most challenging students,
some of whom may have not been engaged in school or had low attendance prior to
engaging with the ALS.
(3) Engagement in
the alternative learning setting must be managed on a case-by-case basis and
students will continue to be engaged based on their individual needs.
