Unfortunately, I have to indicate to the Parliament that there have been reports of attacks on, and cases of vandalism involving, our Muslim community and those believed to be Muslims. My Government will not tolerate any acts of violence or intimidation of this sort against members of the Muslim community. Firstly, the Muslim community in Western Australia is a small community, but it makes a significant contribution to our society. Secondly, and very importantly, the Muslim community joins the rest of us in expressing outrage and anger at what happened in the United States last week. There is no place in our society for discrimination, intimidation and acts of violence against minority groups such as the Muslim community. I have been informed by the police that they will take on board and deal promptly with complaints. They will not tolerate these sorts of acts that undermine the solidarity that exists at the core of our society and that undermine good relations within our community. I urge anyone who has been the victim of these sorts of attacks to report them to the police, because, as members know, when fear gets going in the community, a lot of people think that if they report something like this, reprisals may follow. The police have indicated to me that they will be very proactive and will deal promptly with any complaints. I urge victims of this sort of intimidation, vandalism and violence to report it to the police. Some people on the international stage at the moment are trying to present the events that are taking place as a struggle between religions and cultures. It is not that at all. It is a struggle between a civilised way of life and barbarism. It is as simple as that. We need to respect the different religions that exist in our community. We know the contributions that people of different religions have made throughout the history of Western Australia. I urge all Western Australians: this is a time for unity, not division. This is a time to show our mutual respect to the different communities, religions and cultures in our society. I say clearly that my Government and the Western Australia Police Service will take a tough stand against these acts of violence, intimidation, harassment and vandalism that have occurred in our community.
