FREEWAYS —
WIDENING
778. Mr R.R. WHITBY to the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the McGowan government's
record investment in roads and its commitment to deliver the congestion-busting
road projects that the Liberal–National government failed to deliver in
eight and a half years.
(1) Can the minister update the
house on the construction of the freeway widening projects?
(2) Can the minister
outline to the house what these projects will mean for drivers in suburbs such
as Baldivis and how they will deliver more jobs for Western Australians?

(1)–(2) I
thank the member for Baldivis for that question and his strong advocacy for
constituents in the southern suburbs on the condition of the Kwinana Freeway.
Mrs L.M. Harvey : How do they
feel about Roe 8?
The SPEAKER : Member for
Scarborough!
Several members interjected.
Dr A.D. Buti interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for Armadale,
I call you to order for the first time.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : I think the
Liberal Party is the only group of people in WA that is negative about reducing
congestion on the freeway. As we know, there are significant bottlenecks on the
freeway around Russell Road and up to Roe Highway. There is enormous congestion
around Cockburn Central. In the northern suburbs, there are significant
bottlenecks and congestion points. We have a program to fix those bottlenecks
and reduce congestion. In the southern suburbs, it includes the Russell Road
project, which we launched on Sunday; the Armadale Road widening; the new
Armadale Road to Northlake Road Bridge; and the smart freeway concept. A number
of projects are working in tandem to deliver significant results for those in
the southern suburbs.
In the northern suburbs, it includes
the Cedric Street to Vincent Street and the Cedric Street to Hutton Street
widening. These are initiatives to really reduce congestion at those points in
the north east corridor together with NorthLink, the new Lord Street project,
and the Reid Highway duplication. There are projects across the suburbs to
reduce congestion. A report announced today by a motoring organisation from the
eastern states outlined how, in particular, the north east corridor had not
improved—actually, it had gone backwards—over the last five
years. Our projects, together with the north east corridor, the Kwinana Freeway
and Metronet, are all about reducing congestion, creating a coordinated
integrated plan and making life easier for families.
