SCHOOL OF
THE AIR — INTERNET SERVICES
200. Hon SUE ELLERY to the Minister for Education:
I refer to the changes to the delivery of internet services
to School of the Air students so that SOTA families are now responsible for
organising the contract, making the up-front payment and installing and
maintaining the internet service.
(1) Will the
minister acknowledge that families may be at a disadvantage if they cannot
afford the initial set-up costs or if they opt for cheaper plans that may limit
students' access to the internet?
(2) Will the
government review the common-use arrangements so that the department can cater
for SOTA rural and remote schools?

I thank the
honourable member for the question.
(1)–(2)
In this instance I would be prepared to look it. I am not familiar with why
that cut has been made, if it was appropriate or why the decision was made. In
essence, the education system has to be efficient as well as effective. I am
more than willing to look at it and see if there is some way we can assist
those students who are isolated.
