(1) Planning processes for the Dampier Archipelago Marine Park formally commenced in 2000 with the then Minister for the Environment appointing a community-based advisory committee.
(2) An indicative management plan was released for public comment in January 2005 outlining the intended boundaries, zoning scheme, and other management arrangements for the proposed Dampier Archipelago Marine Park and adjacent Cape Preston Marine Management Area. Following the public consultation period, a revised indicative management plan was drafted to take account of a range of planning matters and issues raised by public submissions.
(3) The Government's highest priority for establishment of marine parks and management arrangements is for the Kimberley. This includes marine parks at Eighty Mile Beach, Roebuck Bay, Horizontal Falls, Camden Sound, North Kimberley and a new marine park extending to the Northern Territory border.
(4) It is not possible to be specific about when the Dampier Archipelago Marine Park will be formally gazetted. A number of reserve planning and statutory steps need to be completed to enable that to occur.
