❓ Opposition questions Premier about cost overruns on the Southern Rail Link project, referencing a previous commitment. The Premier defends the project and attacks the opposition's record on rail infrastructure.

Perhaps tomorrow the Premier will stand behind the Treasurer and nod his head mindlessly. I refer the Premier to his media statement - he may recall it - dated 16 July 2001, in which he states that the southern rail link will be contained within the original budget estimate of $1.2 billion. (1) Will the Premier inform the House as to the latest cost estimate of the southern rail link? (2) Will the Premier commit to provide a full and detailed breakdown of all costings of all components associated with this project as part of tomorrow’s budget? Dr G.I. GALLOP
AnswerView source ↗
(1)-(2) We are very proud of our commitment to the southern rail link. We do not believe that that side of politics wants that railway. Mr M.W. Trenorden: You are absolutely right! Dr G.I. GALLOP: There we go! One half of that side of politics does not want it! We have confirmed that! Let me ask a question. How many centimetres of rail were added to the Western Australian metropolitan rail system by the Liberals? The answer is zero. As the Leader the Opposition would have seen in the release that we put out last week when we spoke on the rail project, the funding for that project is still in at $1.4 billion, as was announced last year by the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure. What we are having is a real rail project. We are bringing the rail along the freeway and under the city. When that project is completed, the people of Western Australia will wonder why there were such negative and short-sighted people on that side of the Parliament who opposed that decision, just as they opposed the northern suburbs railway. I was in this place at that time. I remember how members opposite opposed the northern suburbs railway. That rail line has transformed the northern suburbs and the way we deal with city planning in Western Australia. Unlike the Liberal Party, of course we will provide the full costings of any projects that we enter into on behalf of the people of Western Australia. As members know, the project will go out to tender soon and we will soon be building this rail project. I congratulate the members for Peel and Rockingham for organising a public meeting in their electorates last week to talk about the rail project. I am told that the response from the citizens of their electorates was outstandingly positive about this great project.
