The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) advises:
There are three main mechanisms for providing introductory, advanced and refresher courses for volunteer firefighters in regional Western Australia.
Firstly, volunteer firefighters in regional Western Australia are provided training and professional development opportunities with courses delivered by DFES District Officers, Area Officers, Community Emergency Services Managers, career Fire and Rescue personnel and Volunteer trainer/assessors. These trainer/assessors are supported in the regions by six newly appointed Training Support Officers, who assist with the coordination and facilitation of training to emergency service volunteers.
DFES staff also assist with the coordination and delivery of training courses scheduled by the various local governments and have developed a state-wide training calendar which provides greater opportunities for volunteers to attend training courses outside their immediate area.
Secondly, in September 2014, DFES launched the Volunteer Pathways initiative which has provided a framework of training courses matched to the role of the individual volunteer. Pathways have so far been developed for Volunteer Firefighters and State Emergency Services volunteers. The Volunteer Marine Rescue Services pathway has been developed but not yet released.
Lastly, from early 2016, the Enterprise Training Management System (eAcademy) will be available for volunteers to complete coursework online. This system will provide an enhanced training management and recording system which is interactive to end user volunteers and will allow them to track their own training progress through Volunteer Pathways. It will provide enhanced planning and administration capabilities for training administrators at volunteer brigade level and above.
