TAXIS — PRIVATE OWNERS
477. Hon KEN TRAVERS to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Transport:
(1) Can the
owner of a private motor vehicle change the category of compulsory third party—person—insurance
they pay on their vehicle to allow them to carry passengers for hire or reward
without having a taxi or small charter vehicle plate?
(2) If yes
what is the process and what category of driverXXX ###XXXs
licence would the driver of the vehicle require when carrying a passenger for
hire or reward?
(3) What are
the implications for a Uber driver who is carrying a
passenger for hire or reward in a vehicle that is not a licensed taxi or small
charter vehicle?

(2) Not applicable.
(3) Persons
who do not have the necessary authorisation to drive passengers for reward may
be committing offences under various legislation, in particular the Road
Traffic (Authorisation to Drive) Act 2008, Transport Co-ordination Act 1966 and
Taxi Act 1994 and their associated regulations.
