Health—Radiation therapy services
168. Mr Adam Hort to the Minister for Health:
Last month, the
minister said that she was looking into funding for local radiation and therapy
services for cancer patients in the east metropolitan area. Can the minister
today commit that the state government will address the inequity that exists
for patients who are currently forced to choose between travelling every day to
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital or seeking treatment locally where they must pay
for radiation therapy?

I thank the member
for the question. I appreciate that this issue is of importance to people in
the eastern suburbs of Perth and the hills community. I also note that the
member has listed a matter of public interest motion on this matter for a
little later this afternoon, so we will have more to say about it then. I will
say, of course, that we are looking all the time at how we can best deliver
cancer services to people right around the state. Patients can access cancer
care like chemotherapy for common cancers, including lung, breast and prostate
cancer, at St John of God Midland Public Hospital without any out-of-pocket
expenses. We will continue to work with the federal government on this matter,
as it does have a role to play.
