I refer to the directive by the South Metropolitan Regional Council to include plastic bags, ceramics and window glass in the recycling stream, which has led to the Recycling Company of WA Pty Ltd being forced into administration and thousands of tonnes of recyclable material being landfilled. The SMRC is now refusing to assign the recycling contract or lease to a third party, which I believe would avoid further landfills and bankruptcy, and would allow creditors to be paid out. (1) Is the minister aware that after altering the returns for the recycling contract, which the Recycling Company of WA claims has forced it into administration, the SMRC is now restricting third parties from coming in to operate the Recycling Company of WA? (2) Is the minister aware that it has been contended by some member councils that the SMRC intends to use the Recycling Company’s current position to take over the operation at a fraction of its commercial value? (3) Given the potential conflict that exists for the SMRC, will the minister use his position to intervene and sort out the mess? Mr J.J.M. BOWLER

(1)-(3) I thank the member for Merredin for notice of this question during question time. I will take the first two questions on notice. I am, however, prepared to become involved in the matter. If need be, I will meet with the Recycling Company of WA. I would be only too pleased if the member for Merredin became involved in that process so that together we can try to sort out the mess.
