Given the Minister’s answer to Question on Notice 4002, where the Minister noted that it was not her role to negotiate flights in association with events, as she is not a travel agent, I ask:
(a) what is the Minister’s role as Tourism Minister, if it is not to get more flights and tourists into Western Australia; and
(b) how does the Minister explain her media releases and corporate welfare provided to Jetstar where the Minister stated that the Memorandum of Understanding would deliver an additional 120,000 visitors to the State per year, generating $117 million in tourism revenue over the same period?

(a) The Minister for Tourism has an important role in attracting more flights and tourists to Western Australia by demonstrating to airlines the Government's support for new or expanded air services into the State on a long term basis.  Such action is normally taken via high level meetings with senior airline executives or board members.  Negotiations on specific arrangements relating to route services are conducted by appropriate representatives of Tourism Western Australia and the respective airline, not the Minister for Tourism.
(b) One of Tourism Western Australia's primary roles is aviation development.  The agency aims to develop and implement a five year Aviation Route Development Strategy for the State, which will include establishing and maintaining partnerships with key airlines, such as Jetstar Airways.  The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Jetstar, announced by the former Minister for Tourism last year, has led to Jetstar establishing a stronger presence in Western Australia, which is expected to deliver an additional 120,000 visitors to the State over the life of the MOU.
