I am very happy to do so. This
project is crucially important to the member for Perth's electorate, as
it is to the wider Perth metropolitan area and Western Australia. As has been
said on many occasions, by me and others, this project to reconnect the Perth
central business district with the river, which had been talked about for more
than 30 years, is fast becoming a reality. It is now past the halfway point on
construction time. We have reached another substantial milestone with the
request for expressions of interest from food and beverage operators for three
important venues within the Elizabeth Quay project. A picture is always worth
more than a thousand words, Mr Speaker. The Minister for Emergency Services
will help me to demonstrate that by holding exhibit 1, which shows the proposed
venue near the main entrance to Elizabeth Quay. That will be a casual dining
and alfresco venue on the north-west corner of the quay. Exhibit 2 is on the
eastern side of the inlet, which is also included in the expression-of-interest
request and will be a two-storey —

The
SPEAKER : I have given the minister permission to show these posters in a
very brief fashion. We have seen two, and I give the minister permission to
show the third one.
Mr
J.H.D. DAY : Opposition members are very excited about this project, which I
am sure they will never ever visit. The venue on the eastern side will include
opportunities for waterfront and rooftop dining. The third location is the
reconstructed Florence Hummerston building, which is in storage at the moment.
Of substantial interest to the member for Girrawheen is that in its new
location, it will be one of the key elements on the island that is under
construction. The island does, of course, include a landing point.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Perth, I call you to order for the first time.
Minister, members have now seen those three posters, so continue.
Mr
J.H.D. DAY : Thank you, Mr Speaker.
The island will be an important
destination, particularly for families and children. It will have an impressive
children's playground and also be the landing point for the pedestrian
bridge across the inlet. That venue, which no doubt will include a cafe and
other options, will be an important part of the overall Elizabeth Quay project.
The Duyfken will be moored adjacent
to the island, and, as I said, the kiosk will be reconstructed there.
Through the Metropolitan
Redevelopment Authority, the government is calling for expressions of interest,
which will officially open on Wednesday, 2 July, for a six-week period, closing
on Wednesday, 13 August. These venues are included in the design of Elizabeth
Quay; they will be constructed and owned by the MRA and leased to high-calibre
food and beverage operators. The government expects this to be a very important
attracter to Perth and Western Australia, and I look forward to all the public
precincts of the project being completed around November 2015.
