INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS —
RIGHT OF ENTRY
501. Ms L. METTAM to the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's
announcement to give the Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission new
powers to ensure that only fit and proper people have the ability to enter WA
worksites. Will the Premier guarantee the Western Australian community that the
fit and proper person test to be introduced will ensure that individuals, such
as Monty Margjini, who have criminal records for occasioning bodily harm and
common assault, will not be provided a right of entry permit?

I
thank the member for the question. We will obviously provide more details on
what our right of entry arrangements will be closer to the time when
those laws are being drafted. We want to make sure that only people of a fit
and proper character have the privilege of entering a workplace under our
industrial relations laws. I think that is what the community would expect. I note
the great work by the Minister for Road Safety on our tow truck industry, for which we will also have a fit and proper person
test. It is a commonsense approach and I think it is one that e veryone
would expect. We look forward to consulting with industry and the union
movements, and the great advice we get from the Industrial Relations
Commission. The Minister for Industrial Relations will undertake that work. We
will have more to say about that in the future.
