HEALTH STAFF —
ASSAULTS AGAINST
710. Mr Z.R.F. KIRKUP to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question.
The Minister for Health continues to state that the government's $5 million
investment is only a down payment to stop the violence against nurses. With
that in mind, what is the total amount of funding, when will the government pay
the balance of that commitment, and what will it go towards, which the Premier
should have identified by now?

The member could have asked the
Minister for Health, who is sitting next to me. He has advised me that the
money is being rolled out and it is more
than has been spent before. We are doing a lot to deal with the situation that
has not been done before. As I outlined the other week, we are
introducing duress alarms, stab-proof vests and additional security. These are
the sorts of things that we are putting in place in hospitals.
There is no perfect solution to the
problem we confront. There is no perfect answer. As I said, in a hospital
environment, we often have people who are under the influence of a drug
prescribed in the hospital or a family member who might be going through the
most distressing of circumstances when a loved one might have passed away, and
they react in ways that they might regret. That is why I think it is a complex
situation that needs a considered answer rather than a knee-jerk political
reaction.
