BURRUP PENINSULA, PROTECTION OF ROCK ART
I refer to the proposed expansion of heavy industry on the Burrup Peninsula in the Pilbara, particularly statements made by Hon Clive Brown in a media release on Monday, 11 March, and ask - (1) Which government agency has primary responsibility for the protection of rock art and other sites of international significance on the Burrup Peninsula? (2) On what evidence is the minister able to state that proposed developments in the Burrup Peninsula would not affect the vast majority of the rock art in the region? (3) Have any studies been done to estimate the human impact of atmospheric pollutants on the rock art? (4) If yes to (3), can the minister table such studies? (5) If no to (2), will the minister consider commissioning relevant agencies to undertake such studies before final approval is issued to any proponents? Hon KEN TRAVERS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. I am advised that - (1) The Department of Indigenous Affairs has primary responsibility for the protection of rock art on the Burrup Peninsula. (2) Industry areas were selected to minimise the impact on Aboriginal heritage following surveys on the site. Areas of known high concentration of rock art are in areas set aside for non-industry use. (3) No. (4) Not applicable. (5) Relevant agencies have been requested to investigate the possibility of monitoring cumulative impacts of atmospheric pollutants on rock art. This precautionary measure was requested by the Minister for the Environment and Heritage when approval was given for the Burrup Peninsula fertiliser project.
