Housing—Rent bidding
958. Hon Tim Clifford to
the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Commerce:
I refer to the realestate.com.au
article entitled "Rental price ranges banned on major property sites
across Vic", dated 20 October. Consumer Affairs Victoria has now issued 90
fines worth a combined $750,000 since rent bidding was abolished in 2024. I ask
the following, given that Western Australia is now also looking to stamp out
rent bidding and other unfair practices.
(1) How many fines have been issued for this
reason so far in Western Australia?
(2) What dollar figure does that represent?

I thank the member
for some notice of the question. The answer has been provided to me by the
Minister for Commerce.
(1)–(2) Since May 2024, landlords and
agents have been banned from asking or inviting tenants to pay more money to
secure an available rental property, following reforms to WA's tenancy laws.
The Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety has
undertaken both covert and overt investigations and has not identified any
instances of solicitation of rent bidding.
