POLICE
217. Mr P.A. KATSAMBANIS to the Premier:
I agree with the sentiments the
Premier expressed earlier that our police and other frontline workers are
continuing to do a wonderful job.
I refer to my question on 19 March
about whether the government will be recruiting extra police officers and the
Premier's response at the time that he would consider it as part of the
budget process.
[Interruption.]
Mr P.A. KATSAMBANIS : I am
sure the Treasurer is happy to take questions, but mine is to the Premier.
Mr B.S. Wyatt : I apologise,
member.
The SPEAKER : I do not accept
your apology, Treasurer. I call you to order for the first time.
Mr P.A. KATSAMBANIS : I think
the Premier heard that first part so I will not repeat it.
Given
the Commissioner of Police's admission on 27 March that he does not
have enough police officers and given that the budget is already likely
to be delayed until October, will the Premier now commit to immediately
recruiting additional police officers?

I thank the member for the question
and the Commissioner of Police in particular for his work in the last month or
so. I have had a great deal of involvement with him and he is doing a marvellous
job. I think that the Minister for Police would agree that his work ethic, the
methodical way he works and his deep sense of duty to the public of Western Australia
is on show for all to see. I thank him for what he has been doing.
Clearly, we will need to recruit
more police officers and that is what the government will do.
