BENTLEY HOSPITAL
The Liberal Party has made misleading claims that the state government plans to cut services at Bentley Hospital. Can the minister please inform the house about the real plans for Bentley Hospital? Mr J.A. McGINTY

Members opposite should hang their heads in shame at the scaremongering and misinformation they have been putting out in the community about the future of Bentley Hospital. However, perhaps that is to be expected, given their track record. This is the Liberal Party, after all, and a by-election is due, so they have gone into the community and made certain promises. I refer members to a flyer that has been sent out by the Liberal candidate in that by-election, Bruce Stevenson. The flyer has a couple of photos of Mr Stevenson. It also has a lovely photo of the Leader of the Opposition. One of the photos of Mr Stevenson has on it the caption “Keep Bentley Hospital Open”. It suggests that Bentley Hospital is to be closed. I assure members that nothing could be further from the truth. Last year, after consulting with community leaders, the government announced a $23 million package to upgrade and improve services at Bentley Hospital. That was clearly outlined in the clinical services framework that was released last year. Under that package Bentley Hospital will become a specialist hospital focusing on same-day elective surgery, ambulatory care, aged care, rehabilitation and mental health services. Already, the amount of orthopaedic surgery that is performed at that hospital is being increased, with some ear, nose and throat surgery being transferred from Royal Perth Hospital as part of the government’s ongoing initiative to assist with elective surgery waitlist reductions. The ambulatory surgery initiative has recently been introduced to Bentley Hospital, and some endoscopy waitlist procedures are being transferred from Royal Perth Hospital. In mental health, a housing project to accommodate 25 community-supported residential unit places will shortly be built on the Bentley health campus. We are spending $1.3 million on the adolescent mental health day and community service to increase the size of the current facilities and provide additional staff and equipment. Staff are being recruited, and the builder will commence work this week. A Community Links program offering intensive support to adult mental health consumers who are at risk of readmission to an inpatient facility is being established, with additional staff due to commence on 24 March. Master planning will take place during the course of 2006 for the Bentley Hospital campus to plan for the refurbishment of the rehabilitation and mental health facilities, as well as the upgrading of the hospital over the next 10 years. Clearly we are committed to the future of Bentley Hospital, as we are to the new Fiona Stanley hospital in Murdoch. It is a pity members opposite do not share that commitment. Only yesterday the Leader of the Opposition described the proposed Fiona Stanley hospital at Murdoch, which will be the flagship of our public health system, as a factory that will be too big. In saying that, he has alienated, once again, every single doctor and voter south of the river. I am sure that that proposition is not supported by the member for Murdoch, in whose electorate this hospital will be located. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order! Mr J.A. McGINTY : It is disgraceful that the member would seek to frighten the electors of Victoria Park. However, electors are smarter than the member, and they will see through it. The SPEAKER : Order! I call the member for Dawesville to order for the first time.
