Firearms Amendment Bill 2024
67. Hon Louise Kingston to the minister representing the Minister for Police:
I would like to go back to the very beginning of the
drafting of the Firearms Amendment Bill 2024.
(1)
Could the minister outline how the new legislation was drafted and who was
involved in the initial process?
(2)
What mechanisms were involved in ensuring that there was no conflict of
interest with the people recruited to undertake this important work?

I thank the member for some notice of the question. The
following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.
(1)
Cabinet approved the drafting of the new firearms legislation for Western
Australia. Input was provided by the Western Australia Police Force, the State
Solicitor's Office and other key stakeholders. Drafting of the legislation was
undertaken by Parliamentary Counsel's Office.
(2)
Conflict of interest risks were managed through normal processes by each agency
to ensure that suitably qualified personnel were involved in the input and
drafting of the legislation.
