I refer to Legislative Council question on notice 2636, in which the Liberal opposition asked questions about ambulance bypasses and ambulance ramping. (1) Why did the minister mislead the Parliament when he replied, “Statistics on ambulance ramping are not collected by the Department of Health”? (2) Was the minister’s answer given to hide the fact that prior to this government’s being elected in 2001 there was no ambulance ramping, but under his administration ambulance ramping is now commonplace? (3) Is it true that the minister is using ambulance ramping in place of ambulance bypasses to make his figures look better? Mr J.A. McGINTY

(1)-(3) I think the member for Dawesville in asking that question is just trying to cover up his own deficiencies as exposed in his role in the Peel Health Campus issue over the past few days. No-one has been misleading any - Dr K.D. Hames interjected. Mr J.A. McGINTY : The member for Dawesville is a soft touch. That is his problem. He is willing to roll over and say, “Tickle my stomach and I will give you millions and millions of dollars for a privatised hospital.” We are not going to roll over and put money into the profitability of Health Solutions (WA). Let me make that quite clear. When money is necessary to provide patient care, it will be provided, as it has been by this government on a scale unprecedented in the history of this state. An amount of $3.6 billion to rebuild our health system is the sort of thing members opposite could only dream of. In fact, they could not even dream of it. In the last state election they went around saying, “Here is a marginal seat. We will promise you a hospital. It does not matter whether it is needed or not.” The government has a plan for an unprecedented investment in our hospitals to make sure there is a health system for the future. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Mr J.A. McGINTY : I come back to the question specifically posed by the member for Dawesville; unfortunately, the member does not understand what he is asking. He has made an allegation that I have misled the Parliament. I have not. Dr K.D. Hames : We will give you a copy of the figures so that you will know. Mr J.A. McGINTY : Tell me how I have misled the Parliament. The member has not done that in his question. He stands and makes a bald assertion. If the member for Dawesville’s behaviour underpinning this question is like his behaviour in respect of the Peel Health Campus, it does not warrant consideration. The SPEAKER : Order! Question time is now finished.
