I refer the Premier to the Labor Party’s pre-election policy known as “Labor’s plan to secure our water future”, which states - . . . Premier Geoff Gallop will assume personal responsibility for the Water Resources portfolio under a re-elected Labor Government. Given the disaster that exists in the water portfolio in this state, will the Premier now do as he said he would and allocate himself responsibility for control of at least the Water Corporation Act and the Water and Rivers Commission Act; or will the Premier just continue to be the Minister for Water Resources in name only, with absolutely no water-related acts under his control? Dr G.I. GALLOP

We will have two runs at this matter: I will be able to answer this question and then deal with it in the matter of public importance debate later today. I have made it clear in the past four years that a sense of strategic direction had been missing from Western Australia’s water policy. Most of the commentators on this issue have made the same comment. When we launched our water strategy for the next term of government, and then for the longer term, I made it clear that I would take personal responsibility to deliver on all aspects of the strategy. In the debate later today, I will show exactly how this government is delivering on all aspects and how it is achieving what it said it would achieve. I have therefore fulfilled the requirements of my promise that was made to the people of Western Australia before the last election. This government now has a sense of strategic direction and I am taking personal responsibility to make sure that we deliver water for the future of Western Australia. The SPEAKER : I call to order the members for Vasse and Murray.
