WORKPLACE FATALITY — NAVAL BASE
514. Hon KATE DOUST to the Minister for Commerce:
Today we saw the tragic death of a worker at a cement works
at Naval Base. This is the second workplace death in Western Australia in one
week. It is also the second workplace death at BGC cement works at Naval Base
in less than 12 months.
(1) Has the minister been briefed on the death today by
WorkSafe?
(2) Is the
minister concerned that two deaths at BGC Naval Base in less than 12 months is
a sign that occupational health and safety at that site is not working?

(1)–(2) I
have not been briefed on that specific incident. I was aware of another
incident that occurred yesterday or the day before—the collapse of a
roof at a workplace. I have no specific information about the incident to which
the Deputy Leader of the Opposition refers, and it would not be appropriate
that I speak on it anyway until the investigation into it is complete. But I am
confident that WorkSafe and its inspectors will fully investigate the incident,
and that if there are systemic problems, they will be disclosed.
