I thank the member for the question.
I acknowledge Hon Donna Faragher, Hon Alyssa Hayden and the member for Swan
Hills, Mr Frank Alban, for their tireless efforts in ensuring the upgrade of
this intersection.
Mrs

The

Mrs
M.H. Roberts interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Midland!
Mr
F.A. Alban interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Swan Hills! Member for Swan Hills, I call you to order
for the first time, the member for Midland for the first time and the member
for Willagee for the first time! Now that everyone has been acknowledged, we
will carry on with the question.
Mr
D.C. NALDER : Thank you, Mr Speaker. This intersection has been upgraded
with traffic lights and dualling for a couple of hundred metres each way. This
intersection carries 25 000 vehicles of which 11 per cent are heavy vehicles,
which is some 2 800 heavy vehicles every day. In the five years to 2013 there
were 172 crashes, which is roughly one every 10 days. Fortunately, there has
not been a fatality but four people were hospitalised. This is a great upgrade.
It is important that we acknowledge the City of Swan and its involvement in this
project. There was funding from the road trauma trust account of $8 million
towards this upgrade. The City of Swan was definitely instrumental in ensuring
the design for this upgrade would cater for a future four-way intersection at
this location and it provided the balance of funding to ensure Lord Street
upgrades were constructed accordingly. On behalf of the state government, I take
this opportunity to thank the City of Swan for its input and assistance on this
key project for West Swan.
