Perth International Cabaret Festival
344. Hon Julie Freeman to
the minister representing the Minister for Creative
Industries:
I refer to the Perth
International Cabaret Festival and to the department's own Culture Counts
report indicating that the festival met all its targets.
(1) Why was the Perth International Cabaret
Festival not funded despite meeting the department's performance benchmarks?
(2) How does the minister respond to the collapse
of yet another small to medium arts organisation in Western Australia due to
the withdrawal of government funding?
(3) Will the minister agree to meet with
representatives of the Perth International Cabaret Festival to explain how this
funding decision was made?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. The following response has
been provided by the Minister for Creative Industries.
(1)–(3) The WA government did not withdraw
funding. Since 2020, the Perth International Cabaret Festival has received over
$500,000 from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries
and over $200,000 from Lotterywest. The decision to close the Perth
International Cabaret Festival has been made by its own board of management.
