QuestionView source ↗

Given reports that the Government has available funds from the sales of AlintaGas and Westrail freight, will the minister and member for the area attempt to persuade his colleagues to spend $1.7m to repair the seawall at Onslow, which was destroyed by cyclone Vance? Hon N.F. MOORE

AnswerView source ↗

The member is aware that the Minister for Tourism is not responsible for spending the proceeds of the sales of AlintaGas or Westrail freight. Hon N.D. Griffiths: That’s a relief. Hon N.F. MOORE: No, it is not; I would have been happy to have a go at spending those proceeds. As the member knows, the funds from the sale of AlintaGas have been allocated to a range of projects: The southern and northern railways, health and education, as well as number of other important areas of government expenditure. The proceeds from the sale of Westrail freight will be used to retire debt. Hon Tom Stephens: And there will be $174m worth of debt left at the end of it. Hon N.F. MOORE: It worries me that Hon Tom Stephens might again become a minister. The thought is horrendous. He thinks we should retain an entity that is $700m in debt and accumulating more debt at the rate of $100m a year. Eventually it will lose all its business; yet the member thinks that is a good business deal. I worry about the prospect of him being in government. Hon Tom Helm: Will you answer the question now? Hon N.F. MOORE: The member asked me about the two sales. Why did he not just ask about the Onslow seawall, rather than tying it in with these other things? The PRESIDENT: I guarantee that if the interjections continue, some members will miss out on asking questions today. More than one member missed out yesterday. The minister should bear that in mind, so we can get on with the other questions. Hon N.F. MOORE: I do not want to comment about yesterday, but one member had to ask the same question four times. Regarding cyclone Elaine and cyclone Vance trust funds, some $450 000 has been allocated to help reconstruct the Onslow seawall. The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the commonwealth minister responsible for the trust. The shire is looking for additional funds, and I hope that we can find the funds to complete that project. I have the same degree of enthusiasm for its funding as does Hon Tom Helm.
