WONNERUP WETLANDS AND GEOGRAPHE BAY — WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PLAN
928. Hon GIZ WATSON to the minister representing the Minister
for Water:
In 2008, the Department of Water released its water quality
improvement plan for the Vasse Wonnerup wetlands and Geographe Bay. The WQIP
outlines an integrated long-term plan to improve the water quality of these
water bodies. According to the State Natural Resource Management Office
website, strategic priority projects funding for the implementation of the WQIP
has been cut from $1.253 million in 2009–10 to $350 000 in 2012.
(1) What
programs are affected by the funding cuts?
(2) Is there funding for the dairy effluent improvement
program?
(3) Is there funding for the continuation of the Vasse
Wonnerup Wetlands monitoring project?
(4) What
current and future funding is or will be provided to GeoCatch or other groups
to implement the WQIP?
(5) How will the minster ensure the
future implementation of the WQIP?

I thank the member for some notice of this question.
(1) State
Natural Resource Management funding was approved on a statewide priority basis.
The Vasse Wonnerup water quality improvement plan received $350 000 in 2012–13
for urban stormwater retrofits in the City of Busselton, catchment water
quality monitoring and macrophyte monitoring in the wetlands.
(2) No.
(3) Yes.
(4) Additional
funding totalling $180 000 has been provided to GeoCatch as part of the State
Natural Resource Management community small grant program.
(5) Since the
development of the Vasse Wonnerup water quality improvement plan in 2010, the
Department of Water and GeoCatch have secured nearly $3.5 million in state and
commonwealth funds to implement key management actions. The $350 000 secured
through the State Natural Resource Management strategic grants program takes
this to almost $4 million in approved funding in the third year of a 10-year
project. The Department of Water and GeoCatch will continue to seek grants from
state and commonwealth programs to implement the water quality improvement plan
in the future.
