I refer the minister to the mental health service located at Swan District Hospital, which has been subject to a great deal of publicity due to the tragic circumstances surrounding two staff members, in particular, nurse Debbie Freeman. I am aware that the Premier and the minister visited the service following the incident and made a number of assurances to staff. (1) Why were the work safety orders issued by WorkSafe WA not complied with by the due date? (2) Why has the mental health service been told by the Department of Health that work safety orders will not be complied with due to budget cuts at the health service? (3) Is the minister aware that the nurses will meet tomorrow with a view to striking over the lack of support for their safety at the mental health service and, as a result of this, will the minister act immediately to assure the nurses that the work safety orders will be complied with immediately? Mr J.A. McGINTY

(1)-(3) The member did not bother to give me any notice of the question. I could then have easily given him a very detailed answer. The answer to part (2) of the question is no, that is nonsense. Mr M.F. Board: It has been told. Mr J.A. McGINTY: That it will not comply with a work safety order because of budget cuts? Mr M.F. Board: Correct. Mr J.A. McGINTY: That is arrant nonsense. I am amazed that the member has come into the Parliament to peddle such nonsense. The answer to the other parts of the question is that I will investigate the matters raised by the member and will make myself aware to ensure that the right thing is done by the staff.
