ALMA STREET CENTRE — DEATHS
337. Mr R.H. COOK to the Minister for Health:
I have a supplementary question. I accept that the Minister
for Mental Health has carriage of this policy area. However, in 2009 when the Minister
for Health had full carriage of policy in this area, there were nine deaths; in
2010 when the Minister for Health had part carriage of issues in this area,
there were 11 deaths; and he still has operational carriage of what goes on at
Fremantle Hospital. Will the Minister for Health be asking the Minister for
Mental Health, therefore, to make a submission to cabinet that there be a full
and open coronial inquiry into the circumstances of these deaths?

I will need to have further discussions on these matters with
the Minister for Mental Health. As the member understands, I have had some and
I am aware of the circumstances and have been briefed on the circumstances
leading up to these matters; hence, there is a government inquiry into these
matters. Until that inquiry is concluded and until we have all the information
to hand as to what we should or should not be doing, I will not be making any
comment.
