KANGAROO POPULATION — MANAGEMENT
1313. Hon ROBIN CHAPPLE to the minister
representing the Minister for Environment:
I apologise; two parts of the question are slightly wrong. Hopefully,
the department has worked it out.
I refer to the kangaroo populations in the Town of Port Hedland and the
Shire of East Pilbara.
(1) With regard to the Town of Port Hedland —
(a) is the Department of Parks and Wildlife
concerned about the apparent decline in kangaroo numbers;
(b) how many licensed kangaroo shooters are there; and
(c) is there a limit to how many kangaroos can be taken by licensed
shooters?
(2) With regard to the Shire of East Pilbara —
(a) is the Department of Parks and Wildlife
concerned about the apparent decline in kangaroo numbers;
(b) how many licensed kangaroo shooters are there; and
(c) is there a limit to how many kangaroos can be taken by licensed
shooters?
(3) With regard to the shire of Roebourne—which should be the
City of Karratha —
(a) is the Department of Parks and Wildlife
concerned about the apparent decline in kangaroo numbers;
(b) how many licensed kangaroo shooters are there; and
(c) is there a limit to how many kangaroos can be taken by licensed
shooters?
(4) Are kangaroo populations being managed
sustainably in the Town of Port Hedland, the Shire of East Pilbara, and not the
shire of Roebourne but the City of Karratha?
The PRESIDENT : I will give the call to the Minister for
Planning to answer that question as best she can, but if it is not clear, I will
perfectly understand if she has to take it on notice.

Through you, Mr President, can I clarify what actually is the issue? Is
it that the member referred to the shire of Roebourne rather than the City of
Karratha?
Hon Robin Chapple : The shire of Roebourne does not exist.
Hon DONNA FARAGHER : Okay. I will refer to it as the shire of
Roebourne, but I think we will get the right answer anyway. I do not know
whether the member will like the answer, but this will be the answer.
(l)–(3) (a) The department does not
have data on population numbers at a local scale in relation to the Town of
Port Headland, the Shire of East Pilbara and the shire of Roebourne—or
the City of Karratha.
 (b) One
licensed professional shooter operates across the three local governments.
 (c) Numbers
are limited to 42 000 red kangaroos for the northern zone commercial harvest
quota, which encompasses the three local governments.
(4)  The
primary goal of the ''Management Plan for the Commercial Harvest of
Kangaroos in Western Australia 2014–2018'' is to ensure that the
commercial harvest is ecologically sustainable. The commercial harvest of
kangaroos in the northern zone is managed according to this plan.
