BHP BILLITON — MACEDON GAS PROJECT
665. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the Minister for
State Development:
Can the minister please update the
house on how the Liberal–National government is ensuring that the
Macedon gas project delivers ongoing benefits to the residents of Onslow and Western
Australia?

I thank the member for North West Central
for the question. He understands the amazing transformation that has happened
in Onslow over the past four or five years because of the Liberal–National
government. It is partly the result of two major projects, one being the
Wheatstone liquefied natural gas project, and the other, as the member
mentioned, the S $US1.5 billion project built just outside of Onslow. It
employed 600 people during its two-year construction phase, and now that it has
been completed there are 24 permanent jobs at the facility for people living in
Onslow. Of importance to Western Australia is the domestic gas supply. The
project supplies around about 220 terajoules of domestic gas to Western Australia,
which is about 20 per cent of the entire state demand for gas. It is very
significant. The other important point about this project is that 57 per cent
of the expenditure—around $US900 million—went to Western Australian–owned
providers of services and materials.
Part of the state development
agreement was a community development package of $5 million. On 19 August, I, along
with the member for North West Central, was delighted to officially open new
multipurpose courts, built with $3.7 million of the $5 million package from the
Macedon project, together with another $300 000 from the state government's
royalties for regions money. It is a $4 million facility with two enclosed
basketball courts and one external court, and new scoreboard facilities. The
opening ceremony included a celebrity who the local member was keen to point
out to me—Big T, the X Factor
Australia competitor from Western Australia who did very well. I think the
local member managed to get a selfie with Big T.
There is still $1.3 million left in
the community development package from the Macedon project. That will be
directed towards a skateboard facility. I am looking forward to going up there
to open the skateboard facility next year with the local member. He told me
that he is going to bring his skateboard and show us how to do it.
This government cares about jobs and
economic development, particularly in the regions. We are about getting on and
doing it, and this is another example of a project—the Macedon gas
project—providing gas to Western Australians cheaper than it can be
provided in other states, and also delivering real tangible benefits to
regional communities.
