It is really interesting that the member for Murdoch has such little understanding of what is happening in the southern suburbs. He says we are building a rail line for not many people. The Leader of the Opposition and the member for Nedlands got very upset when the evening services to the Loch Street and Grant Street railway stations were reduced. This was an absolute outrage! These stations were used by 32 people per evening, but it was a disgrace and an outrage that the services were reduced! The member for Murdoch should look at what is happening in the southern suburbs. The city of Melville has a population of 98 900 people; this population will increase to 101 000 by 2006. The city of Cockburn has a population of 70 000, increasing to 82 000 by 2006; the town of Kwinana has a population of 23 000, increasing to 25 000 by 2006; the city of Rockingham will increase from 72 000 to 85 600; and Mandurah will increase from 49 000 to 66 000. In total, 400 000 people will live in those south west suburbs by 2006 - one quarter of the population of Perth. I suggest that members opposite get out of their leafy suburbs, drive down to the south west corridor and have a look. The proposition put by the member for Murdoch, that the Government is building a railway line for not many people, is extraordinary. The only possible rational explanation for his statement is that the member believes that he would advance his candidature for the position of Leader of the Opposition by being somewhat flexible with the truth in the same manner as the man currently occupying that position.
