SWAN RIVER —
FERRY AND TAXI SERVICES
1015. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the minister representing the
Minister for Transport:
I welcome the minister's
comments, as reported in PerthNow on 28 August 2024, announcing that a new
ferry service will be operational between Applecross and the University of Western
Australia within the next 16 months, as the first in a staged approach to
activating the Swan River as a transport option for commuters and tourists
alike.
(1) What
consideration has been given to additional routes over and above the Applecross–UWA
route, and the impact that bridge heights and river depths might have on the
provision of such additional services?
(2) Is the Department of Transport open to the
potential licensing of river taxis, as opposed to or in conjunction with, larger ferries, in an attempt to better
develop river transport options here in Perth; and, if not, why not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. Honourable member, it says Tuesday, 27 February. I
am not sure why it does, but the answer is correct. I draw that to the member's
attention.
(1) The state government is investigating a number of
potential sites for expanded ferry services. Bridge heights and river
depths have been a key consideration of this work.
(2) The
Department of Transport is open to river taxis operating on the river.
Depending on their operation, they may require a licence to operate. The Little
Ferry Co is one example of such an operation already operating on the Swan
River from Elizabeth Quay.
