I thank the member for the question.
It is the case that the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority has recently put
out a request for expressions of interest to lease the Rechabites Hall and the
Perth Hostel in William Street, which are in the precinct where the MRA has
undertaken a lot of refurbishment. The standard of the precinct that has now
been established is very obvious to everybody and there are some wonderful
tenancies within the heritage buildings that have been restored. The Rechabites
Hall is an architecturally significant 1920s building that was previously used
as a theatre and a bank. It has been closed to the public since 2008. The
desire is for it to be redeveloped to include a range of uses such as retail,
food and beverage and, hopefully, creative spaces. Given the nature of the
building, there is a lot of potential, but also there is a need for quite a bit
of refurbishment and restoration to be undertaken, so we will be very keen to
see what the market brings forward.
The Perth Hostel was obviously a
former residential building adjacent to the State Theatre Centre of WA, and it
would be suited to boutique accommodation or possible office space. The
successful bidders will need to offer a broad range of uses, which may include
arts and cultural events, an activated streetscape and integration with the
wider Northbridge area. As I have said, this is a further stage in the
revitalisation of William Street, which I think the MRA has undertaken in a
very effective and professional manner.
