YEAR 7 STUDENTS - SECONDARY SCHOOLING
Yesterday in Parliament the Minister for Education and Training said that the Department of Education and Training is investigating the feasibility of the possible relocation of year 7 students to secondary schooling. (1) Will the minister inform the house of the government’s position on making year 7 the first year of secondary school? (2) Will the minister inform the house of the consultation taking place with parents, school staff, community members and the Department of Education and Training with regard to this proposal? Mr N.R. MARLBOROUGH

(1)-(2) I thank the member for the question and commend him on his choice of tie today. It is a fantastic tie; it lightens up the whole room. This issue has been around for a fair amount of time. It is part of the process of the continuing national intervention by the federal government into the standardisation of the education outcomes. At the moment it has been predominantly pushed by the private sector and non-government school authorities. The push for more consistency in schooling between the states has also added certain dimensions. As a consequence, the Department of Education and Training has initiated a study to examine the issue with the aim of providing advice to the minister in August. The government will not determine its position on the matter until it has received the department’s report. The preparation of the report has just commenced and district directors, principals, professional associations, the State School Teachers’ Union of Western Australia and the Western Australian Council of State School Organisations have been invited to participate. This is an ongoing process, to be finalised in August. A report will be given to the minister and we will look at the issues at that time. It will involve all of the key players that the member for Greenough is concerned about.
