I refer to the Gas Appliance Rectification Program, and I ask —
(1) To date, how many homes have been visited as part of this program?
(2) How many appliances so far qualify for replacement?
(3) How many appliances so far qualify for servicing only?
(4) To date, how many consumers have registered their pre-1980 gas appliances?
(5) Is this program on track to have all appliances tested, replaced or serviced by the end of 2012?
(6) How is the organisation that is undertaking the detailed research into the background of each make and model of appliance able to determine if it will pose a safety risk if allowed to operate on the changed gas?
(7) As part of this research, how many appliances were actually physically tested?
(8) Who is paying for this research to be undertaken?

(1) 25,978 homes have been visited to the end of September 2012.
(2) 8,511
(3) 1,900
(4) The number of pre 1980 gas appliances registered is 18,022.
(5) The completion is expected to be in the first quarter of 2013 prior to the introduction of the changed gas.
(6) - (7) A large amount of test data already existed and was adequately documented in gas conversion manuals and Australian Gas Association records. Initial screening criteria identified automatic replacement for appliances that had been subjected to natural gas conversion in 1971 and those not having current failure protection. This has accounted for the majority of appliances being replaced. Independent gas industry experts have been used to assess other appliances as the program progressed. This has been required in approximately 20 occasions.
(8) Gas producers - as defined within the
Gas Supply (Gas Quality Specification) Act 2009
. There are no Government moneys being expended on this programme.
