ONE NATION, PREFERENCE DEALS
Will the Labor Party be following the lead of the Liberal Party of Western Australia by doing preference deals with One Nation? Dr GALLOP

AnswerView source ↗

The very simple answer to that question is no. I remind the House of the right-wing, reactionary policies represented by the One Nation party in our political system. One Nation is opposed to multiculturalism. In documents it has distributed in recent years it has referred negatively to “the Asianisation of Australia”. We know which school of thought that political belief comes from. One Nation has opposed overseas investment in Australia, which has been linked to the skills, capacities and resources of our nation to build jobs and opportunities for our people. One Nation wants to build walls of tariff protection, which work against the interests of an open-trading State such as Western Australia. The right-wing, reactionary One Nation party wants to make access to firearms in our community much easier. I applaud the efforts of the Liberal-National Government and the state Labor and Liberal-National Governments to tighten this nation’s gun laws. The Labor Party will not do deals with a reactionary, divisive and job-destroying political party. The Liberals in Western Australia have sold us short. They have undermined the reputation of our nation. Who has been leading that charge? The Leader of the Opposition has been leading the charge - the man who said when he was in government that the distribution of preferences to One Nation was a moral and economic issue. He said that we should not allow tactical issues like that to get in the way of moral thinking. The unity in our community on this question has been broken by the Liberal Party. In doing a backflip on this issue, the Leader of the Opposition is doing a disservice to this nation. The Liberals are trying to pretend they have done no deal. However, they have already told One Nation that they will boost that party’s credibility if it gives the Liberals its preferences. The Liberal Party has opened the door and One Nation is in. The next thing on its agenda will be to seek compromises from the Liberal Party on some of our society’s core values. The once great Liberal Party is crawling around in the gutters of history trying to scrape together a few survival votes from a reactionary party such as One Nation. Why are the Liberals crawling around the gutters in this way trying to get a few scraps from One Nation’s table? They lack the wit, wisdom and imagination to carve a place for themselves in the future without dirty deals.
