PERTH FIRE STATION 320. Mr J.N. HYDE to the Minister for Police and Emergency Services: Can the minister please update the house on the progress of the new Perth Fire Station in Wellington Street, Perth? Mr J.C. KOBELKE

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for his question and for his very keen interest in making sure that government projects are delivered in his electorate, and, clearly, for his interest in the welfare of the central city area. The $9.5 million new Perth Fire Station is certainly a very important project. The Fire and Emergency Services Authority has been planning for about six years to make sure that we have a more modern and better-placed fire station. The current site is 29 years old. It has poor traffic egress. In fact, there was a situation there a month or two ago in which a bus had an accident and the whole roadway was blocked. Therefore, we are looking to make sure that the fire appliances can get out of the station and onto the street without the potential to be blocked. There is also the issue that having FESA’s tactical and command functions co-located is not the way in which to provide the very best service at times of emergency. Therefore, we need to make sure that we can provide a very good fire station for the centre of the city. The new station will have four engine bays, sleeping quarters with ensuite bathrooms, kitchen facilities and a gymnasium. In fact, the United Firefighters Union of Australia was involved in making suggestions to improve on the design. We can now see that work is underway on Wellington Street. I hope that that will progress expeditiously so that we can make sure that our firefighters, who do a fantastic job, have a modern facility that meets their needs and provides maximum protection for the people and the property in the central city.
