❓ Hon. Louise Kingston questions the Minister for Forestry regarding timber supply from stockpiles, ecological thinning, and mine site clearing, seeking details on quantities supplied, revenue recovered, and reasons for limited supply to some processors. The Minister's response indicates timber was supplied to contracted customers and all sawlogs were delivered by the end of 2023.

TIMBER SUPPLY — STOCKPILES
900. Hon LOUISE KINGSTON to the Minister for Forestry:
In the written questions for the
budget estimates hearings, the minister stated that $2.3 million was spent
building stockpiles to ensure that resource was available in early 2024. It
appears that some sawmills and other customers are yet to receive any resource
from the Forest Products Commission, either from those stockpiles or from
clearing for mining. I ask the minister to provide advice for the current
calendar year.
(1) How much
timber was supplied to customers by species and grade from those stockpiles
early in 2024, assuming it was supplied by 30 June 2024?
(2) How much timber was supplied to customers by
species and grade from ecological thinning up to 30 June 2024?
(3) Of the $2.3 million
spent on building the log stockpiles and for the additional handling costs, how
much was recovered from the sale of forest products by 30 June 2024?
(4) What quantity
of timber remains in log stockpiles as at 30 June 2024?
(5) How much timber was supplied to customers by
species and grade from mine site clearing by 30 June 2024 ?
(6) If the
stockpiles were created to ensure that the resource was available, why has so
little been supplied to some timber processors?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(6) The
Forest Products Commission has been supplying timber from these stockpiles to
contracted customers and it has supplied all the timber requested under those
contracts. All sawlogs produced under the previous Forest management plan
2014–2023 were delivered to sawmills before 31 December 2023. A small stockpile of high-value recovery logs has
been accumulated from approved mine site operations and began in the
last months of the financial year. Contracts are currently being finalised for
this material.
